The school's goal is to sell 3,000 tickets by May 31, with all proceeds going toward the Eagles Technology Campaign to provide equipment at the school.

Norton 'Red' Gilson, WFSH-AM Fish Radio Founder Passes



I have often been asked how we came to call ourselves 'The New Fish Radio'. The story is simple. We grew - along with our name - out of  the respect I developed for 'Red' Gilson. Red was the visionary who originated what was Niceville's original 'Fish Radio' - WFSH-AM 1340 - in 1979. He was the innovator of what truly was a remarkable radio station in its day, long before the Internet was created and established. Red was for many years, the Voice of Niceville High School sports - a role I proudly serve today. 'Fish Radio' was truly community radio at its finest, and served the Boggy community with personalities, and local sports and events that captured the ongoing attention of the Niceville community which in turn rewarded Red with its great pride and admiration.

I met 'Red' briefly in the late 1990's as he was winding down 'Fish Radio', before he opted to live his life as he so desired, leasing the station to an out-of-area group and proceeding to travel the world with his bride. Although the original concept of 'Fish Radio' disappeared with the new management, and I left the operation, Red's impact on me nonetheless lingered. I always promised myself that, if given the opportunity to return to the Niceville community, I would do so and do all I could to renew what was Red Gilson's vision and community commitment. I was fortunate enough to be able to do so in 2006, when I leased the old AM 1340 frequency myself from another owner, and established 'The New Fish Radio' as the Internet companion to the radio station. When the WFSH-AM broadcast operation dissolved in 2008, and the station ultimately disappeared, I kept 'The New Fish Radio' active and alive, with that same commitment to the community. We still stand today - only stronger than ever. And with it, the Niceville, and greater Okaloosa County area, now has greater outreach than ever through our webcasts of local sports and events. Over these years we have reached unprecedented heights, with listeners now documented to be logging on all around this country and around the world, in every continent on Earth.
When I heard just this past weekend of Red's passing back on February 3rd of this year, I knew I had to stop for a moment to reflect and pay tribute - and give my utmost respect, with praise - to the man who devoted approximately 20 years of his life to his 'Fish Radio' and the Niceville community. And although he never knew it, it was Red who ultimately touched and helped positively transform my life by inspiring and motivating me, from a distance, through what was his day-to-day of living his labor of love, to triggering my ever-exciting vision-become-reality in this world of ever-evolving new technology.

Thank you, Red. Although I hardly knew you, it was you who is ultimately responsible for this life's journey I truly love: The NEW Fish Radio.
RIP Red Gilson.
